A Table Tale
When Timothy and I got married, we were fortunate to either already own or receive the major furniture pieces we needed. We both had beds, I had a dresser, some amazing friends gave us two couches, and we miraculously found an unused washer and dryer. We had everything we needed. Everything, that is, except for a kitchen table.
For a whole year, our dining area looked like this:
Yes, that’s a padded, blue, 1970s card table. My Grandma graciously lent it to us. Whenever we felt the need to sit at our table, we would borrow some folding chairs from the church. We didn’t feel that need very often, however. The table was so shaky and so padded that you couldn’t keep your cups on the table or they would fall over. Not very sophisticated, eh?
But we trooped on. I went through phases where I scoured thrift stores for tables. Then I scoured furniture stores for expensive dining sets. I eventually decided to wait until the right one just hit me.
And, thanks to my amazing parents, the right one hit me this Christmas! They gave us a table!!! (That’s me hugging the box and Timothy sitting there wondering why he married such a weirdo.)
It was one we looked at before and really loved.
It fits our space perfectly! It’s a circle table – my fave! It’s small enough for our itty bitty kitchen, but we’ve added a chair to seat 5 before and everyone fits nicely.
Funny story: the first dinner that Timothy and I ate at our new table, Timothy automatically placed his glass on the floor. Ha! After that, we quickly got used to the luxury that a stable table provided.
Since Valentines Day, our centerpiece has been this little collection full of chocolates. The bowl still has some Hershey’s kisses left, but someone has eaten most of the chocolate on the cake plate. And surprisingly, that person isn’t me! But I’m not pointing fingers at anyone.
But after a trip to Target, I’ve been able to play around with our table more.
Our first tablecloth! I have seen this pattern in the store for ages, but was reluctant to buy it until I knew what kind of table we would have. Thankfully, I caught it at just the right time – it was marked down from $18 to $5! I squealed with glee and picked it up before any other bargain-snooping woman found it.
I really love the way it looks in our kitchen. The yellow in the flowers is my favorite! Oh, and a quick disclaimer: our kitchen is no where close to being “done.” We’d love to put in new flooring, paint the cabinets, get a new refrigerator, etc., but all that will come in time. We also need to reposition the artwork on the wall next to the table. After having a real live table in this space, I think that I should center the artwork with the table and lower it a few inches.
Home decorating is always an ongoing process, isn’t it? I love it!
And since the first tablecloth was such a steal, I was able snatch this gorgeous one up, too! It was marked down from $15 to $4. So that’s 2 tablecloths for $9. Boo-yah!
I think this one looks the best with some place settings to break up the busy pattern. Doesn’t it just shout out “spring is coming, spring is coming!”
Which tablecloth do you think looks the best in our space? Or, if neither of them are your cup of tea, do you have any ideas on what would look great? I’d love to hear what you think.
~Whitney

Hey, Whitney just wanted to let u know i love the table and the 1st tablecloth…but on a side note the set up of your kitchen reminds me of my mobile home when i was single and yall used to come stay with me…kinda neat anyway love your decor: ) Yeah i read your blog all the time, not stalkin you though(lol)
Thanks, Pam! I think that one is my favorite too.
Yes, it does remind me of your old house! The master bedroom and the bathroom next to it are the very same also. But then again, I guess you can’t get too much of an exciting layout with a mobile home. :D
And thanks for reading! It means a lot :) I can’t wait to see you and your adorable baby boy again soon! And maybe Sherman too. Ha!
Quite frankly it doesn’t matter which table cloth you use, just invite me for dinner some time.
Haha! Nice one, Dad.
I like them both… but I’d love to see something with a bit of the same color as the wall… something bright and bold! I’ve lived in my house 20+ years and the decorating never stops. I’m currently rearranging/redecorating … turning my office into a sitting/guest room and the guest room in to my office/dressing room. Having a blast! And I love a bargain!!!
Jae, awesome idea! Thank you! I think something bold would be just perfect. It would tie in that wall a bit better. And it’s good to hear that the fun never stops! I guess that means that by the time I get all the rooms the way I want them, then I’ll want to go back and re-do everything? Haha! Oooo, and I love that you’ll be making a dressing room! You must upload pictures when you get it done!!!
Dear Witney,
Your house is beautiful as always. I love the 1st tablecloth the best, but like Jae said it would be nice if it had some of the wall color in it. I also read your blog everyday, it has become the highlight of my day. even on the weekends I look to see if you posted anything new, HELP…..I’m addicted to your site!!!!! (haha) :)
Love you much, Kelly
Love you, too! Sorry for the addiction thing. Haha!
My dearest Whitney, I so enjoy your blogs. They make me smile really big and laugh continually..You have put the FUN in being Married!!!!! Your kitchen is looking great, love the black table..i just remodeled a rental house and painted the old brown cabinets black with silver knobs…IT LOOKS GREAT and UPDATES the cabinets well. Also, I used the pewter/silver sheets of backspash(they sell it in stock at home depot and lowes) not too pricy…They have great raised designs….the wall paint was a chocolate cherry red(similar to yours) Black or stainless appliances(to save for awhile, you can paint your existing appliances) You can’t go wrong with those colors because so many accents blend with black and red. i love the 1st table cloth but I would pop some red on it to blend with wall or you can watch target for their black/whilte/gold scroll and you can add red in the middle!! Good luck and I’ll keep checking on you..so proud of you! Tell your MOM & DAD & David hello for me…Love you! Note: I like the pics where you have them…it allows for your ceilings to appear higher and you can place a taller centerpiece on the table if needed.
Thank you so much! :) You have some amazing ideas!!! I can’t wait to get some more stuff done in our kitchen. What a fun process! And I imagine it’s fun to be able to decorate other people’s houses too … you can try out all your ideas. :)
I LOVE your table. Super cute and it fits the space perfectly! I like the 1st tablecloth the best. However, I think it’s cute enough to not even have a tablecloth on it. I have a rectangular table and I just use a runner and a centerpiece. It’s cute either way, tho!
