Due to moving and marriage and babies and life, I don’t get to see one of my dearest friends very often at all.  But you know those types of friends that after not seeing each other for ages, you can have one conversation and feel like no time has passed?  Those are the best.  She’s one of them.

So after picking a random date on the calendar and reserving it months ahead, we finally were able to spend a whole day together.  We had lunch, shopped, and then she asked for a knitting lesson.  You can’t imagine how excited I was.  I feel like it may be my personal mission to share with the world how awesome knitting is.  So we bought some large needles, chunky yarn, and some coffee with an extra shot (for her) and extra caramel drizzle (for me).

She learned like a pro.  I won’t be surprised if she’s already done with her scarf – lady’s got skills.

Our table was right next to the counter where people picked up their coffee order, so we had a couple of creepy lingerers.  One lady with painted on eyebrows just stood watching us for awhile.  She looked kind of nostalgic and sadly told us that she used to knit.  And then stood there for ages holding her coffee.  I almost offered her my needles and told her to pull up a seat.  I also made a mental note to never tweeze my eyebrows again.

So we sat in the busy Starbucks, sipping our lattes and laughing at ourselves.  I feel like my friend in general is a whole lot smarter than I am.  Lots.  But here I was, poking her with my giant needles trying to explain myself.  It was like the time I taught my mom how to knit.  The other smartest woman in the world.  It’s a humbling experience.

I haven’t really taught math, no one has ever asked me to show them how to drive, and I’m certainly not going to sit someone down and say “this is how you budget.”  But I can teach you how to knit.  That’s almost as important, right?

Whitney Gothra.  Saving the world one knit stitch at a time.  Boy, my husband sure lucked out.  Ha!

This made my day (which started out terribly!) I had the BEST time. And yes, I did finish my cowl, although I wouldn’t want anyone who knits to look too closely. You are a great knitting teacher, but don’t underestimate yourself. Your life teaches. Truly, I learn something from every blog I read and from every moment we spend together. Love love LOVE you.

I have a feeling that the “eyebrow” lady went home and picked up her knitting needles….I’m sure you inspired her. :-)

Whitney all your posts about knitting got me itching to start a new project, which I haven’t done in a few years. So this weekend I got out my hot pink yarn and that wonderful fuzzy string you can add to knits and started going, I’m sure my husband will love this pink throw lying on the couch when I get done.

Oh yay! I’m so glad. And that’s so funny about your husband! I keep two throws on our couch – one for my husband and one for me. You can kind of get away with an extra girly throw that way. ;)
