On my day off this week I had to go to a wonderful place that all females love – the lady doctor.  Sorry, that may be tmi.  But, it happens.

Side note – who would choose to go into that profession?  I mean, it’s normal for kids to talk about being firemen or teachers or astronauts or Indian princesses.  (The Pocahontas kind.  Ironically, I married an Indian.  So I kind of got my wish, aside from the royalty part.  And I’m too afraid to get into a canoe, but I DO have “Colors of the Wind” memorized.)  But what kid says, “I want to be a gynecologist when I grow up”?!  Is it something that just happens in medical school?  Is it like a calling?  You’re just drawn to it?  Are there recruiters?  Same thing for urologists and the people who do colonoscopies.  Why?

But moving on.

I had to get there a whole thirty minutes early because I was a new patient and had exactly two pieces of paper to fill out. Everything was going swell until I got to the end of the second paper.

Um??

In case you didn’t catch it:

You know, because it’s important for your doctor to know if you have cancer, epilepsy, diabetes, and/or cats.  Cats?  I’m at a loss.

I meant to ask my new lady doctor about it, but I got sidetracked.  You know, because those appointments are so much fun.  But seriously, what does having cats have to do with anything?

If someone could answer this very serious query that can’t be answered by WebMD, I would be much appreciative.

  1. hahahaha – have cats? that’s funny. i guess “having cats” is now a medical condition.

Well… … … you may not like hearing this but, cats can carry a lot of stuff that can make a person sick. My doctor freaked out after I told her I’d cleaned the litter box during my first pregnancy visit. Something about a toxoplasmosis parasite.

  3. This is actually a question I know the answer to! There’s a disease called toxoplasmosis that can be caused by contact with cat feces. It’s mainly a concern for pregnant women because it can cause birth defects. Probably more info than you wanted to know, but there ya go :)

Dacia said it all! It just means that you are excused from litter box duty, when the time comes :) I totally agree with you, at what point does a person come to the acknowledgement that they believe their “calling” is in a particular field??

What the rest of them said – they can possibly carry disease-causing parasites. But it’s pretty rare and anyway it’s just a good excuse to make your husband (or kids) clean the litter box when you’re pregnant ;-) I’ve had cats all my life and they’ve never caused problems. But what a BIZARRE thing to find on a doctor’s office questionnaire!

Ava wants to be an obstetrician. I think the delivering babies thing is what draws people? And the loads of money maybe? :)
