Yesterday, I took my Papa to the airport, and then my Bibi and I spent the rest of the day at thrift stores.  (Papa and Bibi are my mom’s parents.)  We had the best time!  We found some pretty sweet treasures, which I’ll share with you after they get a little t.l.c.  And possibly some spray paint.

One thing that really caught my eye yesterday was this.

Isn’t it amazing?  It’s a quilt covered in yo yos. (yo-yos? yoyos? yo-yoes? hmmmm.)

It was an expensive $250 at a flea market, but Bibi quickly told me that I could make my own and then explained the steps.  It actually sounds pretty easy!  I’m not crazy about the colors in this quilt but I can just imagine it in complementary colors.  Wouldn’t it be beautiful?

I tried to find a yo yo quilt online to show you what I’m thinking of, but I couldn’t find any that I really loved.  They were mostly made in a smorgasbord of colors.  I did find this sweet variation on the quilt, however.

Those are HUGE!  I love this quilt, it looks just like something out of an Anthropologie catalog.

I also found this pillow.  It’s not a quilt, but it’s in beautiful colors.

I think picking a more limited color palette keeps it from looking so busy.

But then again,

Doesn’t this just bring a gigantic smile to your face?  What could go wrong when you’re covered in a handmade yo yo quilt?

Nothing, that’s what!

Have any of you seen these yo yo quilts before?  Do you love them as much as I do?  Do share!

My grandmother used to make the yo-yo quilts before she died. My mom has one of them; it’s a multi-colored one made from left-over fabrics. I think my grandmother began making the yo-yo quilts after she was no longer able to make home made quilts from a quilting frame she had hanging in her house.

Cute blog, Whitney. Saw one at a store.. loved it… wanted to buy it.. thought it said 19.50 or something but it actually said 195! Yikes! If you figure out how to make it, please tell me!

Oh wow, that was expensive! I’ll definitely let you know when/if I figure out how to make one. That way, all our extra money can go towards shoes. ;)

I am in love with yo-yo’s too, and have been working on making them for a couple weeks. I’m using the Clover Yo-Yo maker http://www.clover-usa.com/product/453736/8700/_/Quick_Yo-yo_Maker_%28Small%29 . They’re available in lots of shapes and sizes and are easy to use. I am thinking about making a quilt similar to this one: http://www.bunnyhilldesigns.com/store/products/details/?product=yoyohome — although, the ones that are solid yo-yo’s are really pretty… Just thought I’d share! :-)

I have been making yo-yo quilts for quite some time now. The first one I ever made was a baby gift for my sister when she had her little girl. Since then I have made so many that I can’t remember just how many I have made. I make them crib sized as they are the perfect size for a throw when it’s chilly and you are sitting and watching tv on a cool night. Now I am attempting to make king-sized ones. Beginning with my bed and then making one for each of my married children. I love making the yo-yos. It is relaxing for me after a hard day’s work or evening at work. I watch tv and sew. Most of the time I just buy the fabric, cut the circles, and I sew until the inspiration hits and I know it’s time to put a quilt together. Usually I have color schemes all figured out. The latest of my creations was by request of a friend. Her mother had passed away and she had cut squares out of her mother’s clothes. I turned the squares into circles and made a yo-yo quilt for her as a rememberance for her. The yo-yo’s are easy to make. And they patterns are just however you want to lay out the colors.

I too love the look of the yo yo quilt. I’m about to have surgery and will have a few weeks of recovery at home, so I’m gonna attempt to make a yo yo quilt from my daughters old baby blankets. I’ve been cutting circles for days!
